This is the historic Porsche raced by Gary Auberlen and later, his son Bill Auberlen (Rolex GT & DP). It raced 43 events in the IMSA (International Motorsports Assoc.) series between 1979 and 1990. Its most signifigant wins were a 1st place at the 12-hrs of Sebring (GTU)in 1985, and 2nd at the 24-hrs. of Daytona (GTU) in 1988. Its win at the 12-hours of Sebring in 1985, against many newer and factory backed cars, earned it the name of The Cinderella Porsche in many racing magazines of the day.
By the 1990 24-hours of Daytona, despite the addition of a larger powerplant and conversion to a slant-nose configuration, the little privateer Porsche is no longer competitive against the big-budget factory-backed teams. After an impressive 11-year run in the series the car is retired. It is purchased by a collector in Europe and put into storage until 2006. Thats when I purchased it, in virtually the same condition as the day it last raced.
Along with noted Porsche shops Gunnar Racing and Klupsport racing in West Palm Beach, FL, I undertook a mild restoration to bring it back to it's Sebring-winning configuration. The car's mechanical systems were overhauled and the exterior was brought back to it's earlier RSR look. The interior was left virtually the way it ran in the 1980's with the exception of a modern HANS type racing seat, and upgraded electricals.
It now has a normally aspirated 3.3 liter endurance racing engine built by Kelly-Moss Motorsports, and a period correct 915 gearbox. The engine has approximately 10-hours on it. As it did in period, it has a partial tubular frame, full RSR coil-over suspension, fully adjustable front and rear sway bars, brake bias adjustment, and full roll cage. The original long distance endurance fuel cell was restored, and the car retains all of it's hand made and original hardware. It also comes with it's original & rare Ronal racing wheels, as well as a set of modern BBS racing rims & goodyear slicks. The car was recently repainted, inside and out. It is currently managed & maintained by Klubsport Racing in West Palm Beach, FL where it can be inspected by appointment.
